Exiles Lore - A Primer

Note: This lore is a living thing. Thus, "canon" will change throughout the development of the game and undoubtedly long after Beta and launch. While we have planned out a good bit of the ongoing drama and characters, we're only going to reveal a bit at a time. Feel free to explore, suggest, add and complain. The world will be richer for it.

---
The Setting:
The main narrative (and thus, the game) takes place on a castoff continent within a much larger world. Prior to the Collapse <"What's the Collapse?" Shhh, just wait>, Houses were city/states that had the usual conflicts over land, resources, perceived insults and such which eventually escalated into all-out war. This war led to the Collapse, an event that will be detailed later, which sent most of the continent's inhabitants fleeing to the safety of faraway lands. For thousands of years, the continent has been an overrun wilderness, hostile to anything less vicious than a beast.

Over time, the continent becomes a place where criminals, exiles and miscreants are sent. Many die, but some eke out an existence and start to form villages, societies, strongholds. Over time, others begin to venture back-- adventurers, crusaders, nomads-- and they do the same.

This is where you come in. A would-be inhabitant of this hostile land, you're here for your own reasons. Will you seek solace? Riches? Adventure? Knowledge? VENGEANCE? Will you band together with others, restore an ancient House, create a new one, or venture out on your own?
---

Need a thread to start in? Try this one.

As we go, we'll reveal details about this new world through art & explanation. Throughout development, we'll share here and on the blog. So jump in, create and help us define. And if you have questions or need direction, let's discuss right here.

The Collapse -- I'm guessing something like the fall of the Roman Empire? A collapse of society, famine, drought, exacerbated by hordes of little wizardlings pew-pewing lasers out of their wands.

Houses Conflict -- like medieval italian city states? Venice, Florence, Genoa etc with their patrician families (Montague and Capulet, yo!).

"Over time, the continent becomes a place where criminals, exiles and miscreants are sent." -- so like Australia?

How harsh is this land Wiz? Australia harsh where everything is out to kill you? Or more temperate american new world harsh, where you're probably ok as long as you don't go prodding that grizzly with a sharp stick?

**Edit: I just twigged onto the fact that we'll be re-colonising the old continent that everyone fled from (my hungover brain naturally just assumed we were part of the people fleeing the collapse and heading for a new mysterious continent -- but I like this much more).

So it'll be populated with lots of rad ruins and decrepit castles and such yes? So rather then building something new, many people would naturally take over, re-purpose what was left of the old places?

I like the aspect of recolonising the past and the mixture of the squalid modern groups and the ruined ancient ones.

A few questions about the setting.

How long ago was the collapse?

Will there be defining "classes" as with most RPG's? If so, what are the classes?

That's all I really need to know for my basic start in role playing.
They call me the Crier. No, I don't cry a lot. I deliver news you uncouth barbarian.

Here's one for you Wizzle, is there any defined 'other' for us to be worried about.

We have brigands and outlaws yes? But any bad dudes like the Byzantinnies from TC. I liked the ravagers, of course. They allowed me to play with all sorts of action/horror tropes.

So anything like that lurking on this continent? Some old bad wizzies of the Saruman variety perhaps? Something that might make us want to keep one eye open when we sleep?

Fantastic initial questions, everyone. Let's dig in (with the caveat that some is yet to be revealed...):
The Collapse -- I'm guessing something like the fall of the Roman Empire? A collapse of society, famine, drought, exacerbated by hordes of little wizardlings pew-pewing lasers out of their wands.
We're purposefully withholding that info... for now. But yes, "things" collapsed.
Houses Conflict -- like medieval italian city states? Venice, Florence, Genoa etc with their patrician families (Montague and Capulet, yo!).
    Something like that, yes...
"Over time, the continent becomes a place where criminals, exiles and miscreants are sent." -- so like Australia?
    Exactly.
How harsh is this land Wiz? Australia harsh where everything is out to kill you? Or more temperate american new world harsh, where you're probably ok as long as you don't go prodding that grizzly with a sharp stick?
More like Down your way, Finji (Australia, for those not familiar with Mr Finji's whereabouts).
**Edit: I just twigged onto the fact that we'll be re-colonising the old continent that everyone fled from (my hungover brain naturally just assumed we were part of the people fleeing the collapse and heading for a new mysterious continent -- but I like this much more).

Absolutely yes yes yes. The Ruins of Anglonicus eventually are built UPON by the new inhabitant. You are grokking the angle! Let's explore, shall we?

Loooong ago! Time enough for ancient castles to be ruins, cities to be partially underground and all sorts of menaces bounding about...

Yes there will. You can anticipate the basics, but we have plans for plenty of twists on the classics.

Yes, there are "others," but revelations about these folks, and the backstories of the ill-fated Houses and those who inhabited this place prior to the Collapse are part of the game's reveal. We'll play with this some as we RP, though. I won't let you venture out with zero info...!

    1.  What is the current tech level and is it different from the tech before the collapse?

    2. Are there more than one sentient race on the planet? If yes can we get descriptions?

    3. Magic system what is it? And is there a different system for followers of a religion?

    4. Is there an antagonist person, group, religion, species?

    more to come,

Western medieval, and yes, there was much lost in the Collapse, but the Collapse only happened on this continent. Folks that weren't dead fled to lands apart and have been gone for quite some time (well, not all of them, but we'll explore that later). And by "quite some time," I mean farzillions of years. Long enough that mighty citadels are overgrown ruins and once-proud cities have crumbled into unrecognizable disrepair. We'll unearth tech long lost, but we'll start off with pre-1600s western medieval.

    2. Are there more than one sentient race on the planet? If yes can we get descriptions?

Yes, there are humans, elves and some others mixed, but after the Collapse, there are even Others yet to be revealed. Give us a little time on descriptions, and feel free to improvise. We'll be taking cues from you all as we develop...

    3. Magic system what is it? And is there a different system for followers of a religion?

There is and always has been magic, but the system is in development, so stay tuned.

    4. Is there an antagonist person, group, religion, species?

There are many (and many echelons of them), but players won't know all as they begin. We'll be exploring some of that drama (and some of those baddies) in the RP threads.

Will magic be limited to Wizards, priests, and a mix or sub class of them? Or will there be magic that can be tuned or suited for other classes?

would think maybe the BOOK would have a few magic tricks in just costs more to use has weaker effect's or you have fewer points /amount to cast ?

Will there be Dwarfs? I Like Dwarfs! Really gets the taste buds salivating so far.

  • TheWizardTheWizard Posts: 838 Wizard
Haha, I love your Dwarf-enthusiasm, @Emyr. Yes, we're fooling with our version of dwarves, but I don't have details yet. The many many races of this castoff continent are being designed right now, and we'll show concepts as they come.

I'm prepping a game development update for you now that will have some early imagery, but it will focus on the player character first (and we're starting with humans...).

From what I have seen on here so far it looks great everyone else asked the pertinent questions I had thought of except how long til release? If I didn't just miss it...

Its also pretty cool that I just got a badge for leaving my first comment thanks guys lol
  • TheWizardTheWizard Posts: 838 Wizard
Haha, you're very welcome, @Wulfio, I trust you will ascend past Mendicant before too long as well!

To your question about release, we're just into development now, so there aren't hard deadlines just yet. We are aiming at a mid-2016 release, though, so it shouldn't be too long. And if you're interested in Beta, this community will get the first invitations, so you've come to the right place...

    @TheWizard

Based on context I'm assuming the RatWolfSkeletons. Because the first enemy is contractually obliged to be a giant rat of some description.

unless i have missed other first enemy options? then i'm going with the ratwolf .
unless you going to do a poll for the first enemy with choices?

Now there you go, @helpicantfly! We will have to do some polls about early enemies! The Ratwolfskeletons have evolved in our design meetings as a joke because (as @Kjelfalconer pointed out) every game does some take on a wolf (or a rat, or a spider, or a skeleton) in its early PvE battles...

/makes a note about a poll in his scroll

Love the idea of ratwolfskeletons! Are enemies going to scale dependant on level? Or will different types of monster/enemy appear as you develop. I.e. ratwolfskeletons are always low level but skeletonwolfrats are always much tougher?
  • TheWizardTheWizard Posts: 838 Wizard
Haha great twist on our "wink." Enemies will indeed scale. You will find some that scale between certain levels of difficulty and some that are only higher levels, but every kind of enemy NPC will have a range.

And based on your name-switch, I am now officially afraid of skeletonwolfrats (but not ratwolfskeletons, of course)...
